There I was a high school kid with with a desire to dance but no dance experience, trying to figure out where to start....
The thing is, at the time I had just stopped playing baseball.
I was desperate for a new hobby that I loved as much as I loved baseball.
The big problem was that I didn’t think I could learn to dance because I was stiff as a rock from playing sports my entire life, had no sense of rhythm, and two left feet.
That meant I didn’t exactly think I was capable of learning to dance, I went to a few classes and felt majorly out of place... like everyone was watching me.
I was ready to just give up on learning to dance altogether and go back to trying to find another hobby…which sadly meant I almost gave up on my passion for dance.
Then, As If By Chance, Something Amazing Happened...
After many prior failed class attempts, I went to a new dance class at Stevens Steakhouse...
The World Famous Stevens Steakhouse in Commerce, California.
As soon as I showed up, a really friendly instructor (Ashkan J.), waved me over to his class because I looked lost. He was so welcoming and for the first time I felt like I was in the right place.
When his class started, I noticed something unique immediately. He taught differently…he focused on the basics, the fundamentals, the core of dancing. He specifically told us to ignore flashy moves and focus on the the proper form and execution. He compared it to building a solid house, first you build the foundation, then the walls and roof, and THEN you decorate and hang the pictures on the wall.
He continued by saying that most people try to decorate the house before its even built.
I took this advice and it changed everything for me. I now knew it wasn't about the flashy, impressive moves, it was about mastering and perfecting the CORE TECHNIQUES of dance. Then, everything becomes easy.
I took every class of his for months, never missing a lesson or a chance to learn more.
Instantly it became crystal clear to me how to learn to dance. It isn’t something you’re born with, it isn’t an talent you either have or do not have.
Its a skill... which means its developed by learning step by step and progressively increasing difficulty.
Its like learning how to ride a bike or play the piano.
It takes a good instructor, a well planned learning curriculum and practice.
My plan was to start learning everything I could from every instructor.
So I started taking workshops at every dance congress, paying for privates with the best dancers I could find locally, and danced every night to put my skills into practice. But I didn’t stop there.
I then joined the dance company Bachata Caliente, where I spent 2 years undergoing intense instruction with World Renowned Co-Directors Jorge Contreras and Leslie Ferreira.

Later, I continued undergoing intense training with Jorge Contreras, learned how to teach, helped him direct some of the dance groups in Que Rico Dance Company,
I traveled the world dancing and performing and even won awards for "Best Teacher" & "Being a Contribution to the Bachata Community"
After years of learning and dancing for fun, I decided to take the leap of faith and make this my full time career.
Me teaching one of my first classes way back in 2009 at Stevens Steakhouse.
After that, I spent years teaching students, testing my teaching methods and slowly developing my own Bachata curriculum...
When Nicole and I started teaching together, she had her own set of problems she ran into while learning to dance.
She had very specific things she wanted to teach the ladies, and also had tons of great pointer for the guys (from the ladies perspective).
Together we fused our two teaching methods and organized all of our "golden nuggets" into our perfected teaching method. Which turned into our in-person "Master Class" a progressive 3 month curriculum.
